The Story Behind Our Coffee Tampers
There was a time when tamping was a total guessing game. Too light? Weak, watery shots. Too heavy? Over-extracted nightmares. And don’t even get us started on the uneven pucks. Every espresso attempt felt like rolling the dice—mostly landing on disappointment.
That’s why we created our coffee tampers: perfectly weighted, ergonomically designed tools that put the power in your hands (literally). With these beauties, you’ll achieve even pressure, consistent pucks, and café-worthy espresso, all while looking like a total pro.
Press smarter, brew better, and wave goodbye to wonky shots forever.
FAQs about Coffee Tampers
What's wrong with the coffee tamper that came with my machine?
Many espresso machines come with a standard coffee tamp which will get you started, but with time and experience, you'll probably start noticing the nuances of inconsistent coffee. If your espresso machine came with one of those cheap, lightweight little plastic ones, then please, for the love of a good cup of coffee, upgrade asap. The incorrect tamp can result in bitter and burnt coffee from being over extracted, or a tasteless, watery brew from underextraction.
Without adjusting any other variables like grind size and bean (which you still can't forgo!), you'll probably notice an immediate improvement in your coffee experience just from upgrading the tamp.
What size coffee tamp do I need for my coffee machine?
The most accurate way to determine the right coffee tamper size for your coffee machine is to measure the inside diameter of your filter basket. The correctly sized coffee tamp should be around 0.75mm smaller than your filter basket's diameter. This ensures an even compaction when tamping.
How do I measure my filter basket?
Not everyone is going to have one of those nifty machinist calibers to measure the filter basket with. Alternatively, you can use a steel measuring tape with 1mm measurements, and with a steady hand, hold it above the filter basket to get the inside measurement. Deduct 0.75mm from the final measurement and round to the closest standarised coffee tamper size from the available options of 49mm, 53mm and 58mm. For example, if your basket is 58.74mm, then a 58mm coffee tamper would be the best option.
Does the weight of a coffee tamper matter?
It certainly does. When you hold a weighted coffee tamper, you'll immediately notice the difference when applying pressure to your ground coffee beans. Having the added weight in the tamp helps ensure consistent pressure when tamping coffee grounds, which is crucial for achieving a balanced and flavourful extraction. Weighted coffee tampers can help the home barista like yourself to apply a more even force, preventing uneven distribution of grounds and ensuring that the water can flow through the puck consistently.
What is the ideal pressure for tamping coffee?
General consensus says between 13-18kg per square inch (PSI), allowing for extraction that doesn't compress too much or too little. The grind size, coffee bean type and personal preference all dictate the ideal pressure needed in your tamp to achieve your perfect cup of coffee.
It's also important to note that using a calibrated tamper can help you achieve consistent pressure and maintain the ideal range. Additionally, experimenting with different pressures can help you find the perfect balance for your specific setup and preferences.
